Veronica Webb served as a profound muse for Azzedine Alaïa.
Azzedine Alaïa ✨ Veronica Webb
Renowned fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa, affectionately dubbed “The King of Cling” for his sculptural garments that accentuated the female silhouette, passed away on Saturday at the venerable age of 82. Hailing from the North African nation of Tunisia, Alaïa unveiled his inaugural ready-to-wear collection in 1980 and played a pivotal role in advocating for diversity during a period marked by a notable absence of representation within the fashion realm. He adorned numerous Black luminaries and facilitated the ascendance of several iconic Black models from relative obscurity to esteemed household names.
Veronica Webb, who ascended to prominence as the first Black model to secure a major cosmetics contract upon being appointed Revlon’s spokesmodel, also credited Alaïa with her rise to supermodel stardom. In a Vanity Fair interview, Webb articulated, “Did he start my career? Are you kidding? Myself, Naomi, Stephanie—he taught us how to use our forks, how to walk, how to take rejection, how to present ourselves. He treated us all like flesh-and-blood children.”
Webb’s association with Azzedine Alaïa was profoundly personal and transformative, as Alaïa and his partner, Christoph von Weyhe, embraced the role of surrogate guardians to Webb, imparting their knowledge of the French language. Webb collaborated with Alaïa, featuring in his Spring/Summer 1992 collection, and articulated that his creations were “like bullets” that endure eternally. @veronicawebb @maisonalaia
